LES TROLLS
interviewed by LFO DEMON in spring 2005

I didn´t do any interviews- since 1994 or something so the questions might be a bit lame. Take Care! But somebody had to hype LES TROLLS a bit because they are simply doing great music. I discovered them the first time 3 years ago on a french label called Exec records and got their 2nd record on their own "trolls" label afterwards. Really totally unique stuff: a mixture between hiphopish-beat structures and cut+paste techniques with light amenbreaks and experimental sounds.
I was quite impressed when getting their other releases: all of them differ from each other and aren´t following the same scheme. LES TROLLS use elements of hiphop, electronica and breakcore – and combine them freshly on each record. Some records, as the above mentioned Trolls 2, reflecting a hiphop-beat´n sample tradition (in some tracks they even work with french MC´s); others are going more into some dark-electronica-downbeat-breakcore direction.
To hear how LES TROLLS sound like- check their website http://www.lestrolls.com/ with many mp3 files for download.
So let´s check out what these guys have to say...

Tell us something about Les Trolls: who are you and when did you start? Are you doing music alone or together with others mostly? Who is "les trolls" and the other acts?

1993, in Toulouse south of france with the discovery of electronik musik and free party ...so....At the start we were three guys mixing strange break : nurgle, swog and spek, trying to connect with real alternative scene of electronik music, free party, warehouse , squat parties, art events, vernissages. During this period, we had the first experience with the vinyl production: tripkoniks 01, onu 01, onu 02, onu 03.

Spek has been working on several projects, such as Original Network Underground, a label orientated on hardcore and break soundz which was maybe a first approach of the breakcore.
Then after some solo production, he played in some sort of trip hop jazzy electro band called Kapsaicine together with two others members, a female singer and a jazz guitarist/ bassist. Some gigs followed in toulouse and in some interesting places in france like Piano en valois (2000) angouleme, at this occasion, nurgle and spek had a real occasion to meet each other, musically speaking,
That was maybe the beginning of what we do today. In 1999 Nurgle and Swog moved to Paris, we 've made a studio, and a sort of jam area in order to meet new musicians new mc's and people simlpy motived into new soundzzz, new experiences. By the way, three guys came to the crew then: Abraxas and Azzia as MC's and Spek aka (Troubleclef , Ekspe , Nightliners) as composer, sound engineer and audio designer. All these people are part of trolls "as solid as concrete".
After that we've been able to work on real concepts, projects and -logically- new releases.

Being in paris gave us the occasion to train many different sets with sounds systems and different scenes like "la fleche d'or", le palais de tokyo, piano en valois (angouleme), musee d'art contemporain de toulouse "les abattoirs" and obviously a lot of underground parties and festivals like french teknival, east europe countries techno festival, squat parties in paris (le treize)...then our records came out like trolls 002, trolls 003, Exec, Cavage 09, Cavage 011 and in February 2004 followed the creation the red light studio in BRUssELS.

When did you start to make music? Any bands and projects you did before? How did you meet each other and everything...

The Trolls started in 1997 concretisation of living in community, making free party ....

Which are your biggest musical influences in genres and artists? What musical background do you have? How did you get into the music scene?

conservatory, guitar, drugs , piano, saxophone, free parties ,......
biggest musical influence:rock n roll ( led zep, jimmy hendrix jefferson airplane black sabbath,...) punk (dead kennedys, the clash, a lot of classic jazz as duke ellington, art blakey, lionel hampton, some electro : depeche mode
hardcore, biohazard, sick of it all, minor threat, dead can dance, beastie boys , grauzone, einsturzende neubauten, nation on fire, laurent garnier,Dj muggs, jeff mills the exploited,no boundaries,no limit no fascism, even pop radio fm music ( pop ,i mean popular music, rap, rnb, and many others
THE FIRST REAL BLAST in elctronic music for both of us: Ministry, LARD, Revolting cocks that was, for us, the first fusion between rock n roll and electro shit .

How would you describe your own music?

Eclectic at maximum ,changing everery day , depend of our mood, and the different musicians we can work with. we make music for pleasure. we could describe our music as "hard to sale" .

What does "Breakcore" mean to you? Do you feel somehow connected to it?

Breakcore for me means a sort of evolution of the breakbeat, jungle, industrial but which is not obliged to use breakz. Indeed our work has been several times orientated on making break without using breakbeats but just soundz and try to turn them into rythmical tools. We really feel as a part of the breakcore movement as we've been acting in the scene since the beginning - before the word "breakcore" has appeared, if u see wada mean... We basicly feel connected in the scene because we like it and because we feel necessary to put colors into this sound, that begins to have a real format, and that sucks!
Breakcore means too a sort of commercial movemen, a trendy thing, and actually we really don't feel connected with this part of the thing, not because of the growing size of it but about the quality.

How would you decribe yourselves: as DJs/ programmers/ composers/ musicians or whatever?

At the start musicien ,dj ,and now programmer, sometimes nerdz, sometimes fuckin badass lazy muther fuckerz

You are playing also "real" instruments- how do you combine this with your electronic music and how do your live shows look then?

We are playing few instrument: piano, saxophone, guitar. We try to sing as well and trying to record the most musicans we can in our studio in bruxelles (www.red-light.be). Our goal is to do concerts with musicians, like a band, in order to offer real energy. It's like each time we assist to a concert of any kind of music we just feel like something running all along your skin,u could cry if you hear something really strong. We really want to use the stage, play shows, entertain, take pleasure, give pleasure compose, do improvisation, and not continue to play only with two laptops, just few synthesizers and a midi controller.

Are those MCs on your records a constant part of Les Trolls or did you just get them to sing in the voice tracks?

Our MC's are totally part of les trolls but it is always dificult to work with them on a liveset because we are not living in the same country.

What about your labels? You also release records by yourself- why that?

Founded by nurgle ,release by ourself because there is no fucking deal, we just need to have the liberty of doin' what we want, when we want .
Also it is really important for us to manage all the production, since the composition, the artwork, the mastering and the production as well. We like the HANDMADE way.?

What is Antibreak records? Why did you found that sublabel and what is its concept?

Antibreak is a sublabel of les trolls - an extension of the trouble clef mad mind. It is called "antibreak" because it is the intention to go against the stream ( i don't say mainstream, shall i?). It is a way for us to find a sound area between electronica, breakz, and weird soundz. It is also a sort of tool for deejays, as u could have heard it, some tracks are made to break the flow of the sets, or to play on a third deck, in order to give more volume to the sound.
Actually the format should stays as it is like: a main weird break track on the A side, a down tempo track, and a special tool on the B side
We can call it too a "hard to sale format" but that's really a choice.

I heard that you just moved to Brussels?

Belgium is more cool for music and living than france. I think so. There is more experimental feeling in the vision of music. The audience is really curious, attracted by new weird stuff. Moreover, Belgium is a little country placed in the center of Europe, an interesting crossroad, so you are close to everywhere. It is simple to go to Paris, London, Rotterdam, Germany and so, share more.
What i want to say is that Belgium has always been forward to the dance music scene, compared to France. Remember all the artists are coming from there, the
Rave parties. And at least, we had a plan to open a recording studio, in a really good place so we did it. You know, it was quite cool for us to move away from France.

Is that an invasion of french musicians now in Brussels? Seems like many artists are moving there at the moment.

Yes, we can call it an invasion , that's why we gonna move very soon!!

Any future activities? And on what are you working on currently?

Doing more music, more live, more productions. Working on a release with Brooklyn beats, omeko, trakma 3. Also working on the Trolls5 and antibreak3 and on a house project (Night liners) which is going to be out on a CD promotion tour in the US (east coast, nyc, brooklyn, rhode island, new jersey, massachusetts).

What music are you listing to at the moment?

Everything, because this is just music, but sincerely, more acoustic and pop stuff than only electronic and underground music

Any interesting stuff you´re doing when not doing music?

sushy addict, sex, beers, eat meat, party, graphic art (painting, graffitti), traveling, meet foreign people, foreign culture, learn new languages, girls, visit museums, open our eyes, women, girls ( did i already say it?).

Any more messages?

Keep the music real, keep the movement connected, enjoy, share. Preserve the diversity, act and play for peace and freedom.

....written in a train somewhere between Brussels and Geneva.

Thanks for the interview and good luck with your future plans!
